Protect Your Land
If you own a special natural property, you may be wondering how to ensure it remains protected for the future.
The Hastings Prince Edward Land Trust works with landowners who want to conserve forests, wetlands, shorelines, grasslands, wildlife habitat and other important natural areas. Depending on your goals and the property, options may include donating land, selling land for conservation or establishing a conservation easement that protects the land while you continue to own it.
Every property and every landowner is different. We can help you explore the conservation options available, understand what they involve, and determine whether working with the Hastings Prince Edward Land Trust is the right fit for you and your land.
Where properties also include important farmland, working landscapes or cultural heritage features, we work with other organizations and partners to help ensure these values are conserved as well.
Protecting your land creates a lasting legacy — safeguarding nature and wildlife habitat for generations to come.
Land Donation Incentives
Protecting your land can leave a lasting conservation legacy — and there may also be significant financial benefits.
Canada’s Ecological Gifts Program provides enhanced tax benefits to landowners who donate ecologically sensitive land, or a conservation easement on that land, to an eligible conservation organization. If the donation qualifies, the donor may receive a charitable tax receipt for the eligible value of the gift and may pay no tax on any capital gain from the donation. Unused tax benefits may be carried forward for up to 10 years.
Both individuals and corporations can make ecological gifts, and provincial tax benefits may apply in addition to federal benefits. The program is designed to make it easier for landowners to protect important natural places while providing meaningful financial recognition for their generosity.
Not every property or donation will qualify. We encourage landowners considering a gift to speak with us early in the process and to obtain independent legal and tax advice.
